The Isle of Cumbrae - just a stone's throw away

Watch our latest vlog about the Isle of Cumbrae - just a five-minute ferry journey from Largs.

The Isle of Cumbrae, also known as Great Cumbrae, is really easy to get to – CalMac offer a daily service from Largs with regular return trips at a very reasonable price, even for taking your car on board. It only takes 5 minutes to get across to the island!

From Glasgow, you can get a train to Largs that takes about an hour; driving takes about 45-50 minutes.

The main road in Great Cumbrae is a 10-mile loop around the island, with Millport being the main town. As soon as you get off the ferry, you can get a bus to the main town. There’s also more than 1000 bikes available to hire on the island.

While in Millport, you can enjoy the views and try out the many cafes, restaurants and hotels on offer.

You’ll also see the crocodile rock in the sea. More than 100 years ago a local man decided the rock looked like a crocodile and decided to paint it! Many people come far and wide to have their photo taken with the Millport Crocodile.

While you're still in Millport, you can also visit The Cathedral of The Isles, Britain’s smallest Cathedral which dates from 1851.

Over on the west side of the island you’ll get to see the Indian Rock too. This rock was painted back in the 1920s. It can be seen from the road and high up on the cliffs on the stretch of road from Fintry Bay to the Hush Hush.

On a clear day you’ll see breathtaking views over to the Isle of Bute and the Isle of Arran.

If you like your golf there’s a club with an 18-hole golf course. There’s also a SportScotland National Centre, and Newton and Kames Bay beaches are excellent for windsurfing.
